We know a lot about power here at Good Energy – we’re a renewable energy company after all. We also know a lot about being determined, fair, straightforward and inclusive – our company values.
That’s why we are really proud to be sponsoring the grassroots of our local rugby club, Chippenham RFC, a fair inclusive club whose values closely match our own. And last weekend, we were especially proud to help them to bring their Minis Festival to life.
On arriving at the festival, we were amazed by how many children there were. And how much noise there was.
With over 1500 children across 130 different teams – the only word you could use to describe the day was Joy. Everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves, running around and playing a sport they love. And we are so glad that as a sponsor we helped make that happen.
Inclusivity and equal opportunities
Chippenham RFC has helped to develop several high profile players, including ex-England player, Kim Oliver, who we met at the Minis Festival.
Kim joined Chippenham Rugby Club at nine and was the only girl in the team. At 12, she was told by the sport’s national governing body that she would have to stop playing alongside the boys. There were no girls clubs. With the support of her family and Chippenham Rugby Club, Kim challenged the ruling, and continued to play until she was 14.
Kim’s actions ultimately resulted in the authorities agreeing to support girls’ rugby nationally; and she went onto earn 43 caps for England’s women’s team, including a World Cup final.
“If it hadn’t been for Chippenham Rugby Club’s support, I would probably have stopped playing like so many others girls. I will be forever grateful for the backing they gave me as a 13 year old girl and it’s to see so many girls playing in the Minis Festival today!” said Kim.
